Building a Visual Identity Without a Logo

Client: Veterans Health Administration Office of Healthcare Innovation and Learning (VHA OHIL)

I was tasked with developing a distinct visual style for VHA OHIL that adhered to VA’s established style guide and standards. The only catch: no logos allowed. VA has a strict and comprehensive “seal and signature” system for visually identifying individual offices, and while OHIL applied for an exemption, they were denied. The task at hand was a lofty one. Develop a unique visual identity, working within the framework of VA’s guidelines; to help OHIL stand out without standing apart.

I worked with OHIL leadership to focus on incorporating key elements from the VA’s style guide, including color palettes, typography, and seal and signature usage, while introducing custom design to enhance OHIL’s identity. This approach ensured a professional and consistent visual language across all OHIL materials, allowing the program to draw on the well-developed visual identity of VA, while also standing on its own.
